Learning Is Essential for Personal Growth
It expands horizons, challenges beliefs, and provides us with new perspectives. Personally, it fuels my creativity, enhances my problem-solving skills, and equips me with the tools to adapt to a strange, ever-changing world.
"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you."
- B.B. King
Learning has gifted me with knowledge and skills that nobody can snatch away. It has become a source of empowerment, shaping not only my personal life but also my professional endeavors.
Crafting My Personal Learning Plan:
A Roadmap to Growth
In short, I made a list of all the broad topics that interested me, did some light Googling to refine that list down to more fleshed-out charts and hierarchical structures, and there it was. I named the result “Polymath Training v1“ and started working on designing an actual lesson plan around the topics.
Creating "Polymath Training" has been a transformative experience, here's the process in a little more detail:
1. Identifying My Learning Objectives
I started by asking myself, "What areas of knowledge or skills do I want to develop?" I set specific learning objectives that resonated with my passions and aspirations. Whether it was deepening my understanding of psychology, mastering a new language, or honing my leadership abilities, I aimed for clarity and purpose in my pursuits.
2. Exploring Learning Resources
The world became my classroom as I sought out diverse learning resources. I delved into books, absorbed online courses, listened to thought-provoking podcasts, attended workshops, and sought mentorship opportunities. The abundance of resources allowed me to explore subjects that ignited my curiosity and pushed me well beyond my comfort zone.
"The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill;
the willingness to learn is a choice."
- Brian Herbert
3. Designing My Learning Routine
To make learning a consistent part of my life, I worked to improve and tailor Polymath Training to better suit my needs and schedule. I allocated dedicated time each day for different subjects, to keep me on my toes and in what I like to call "student mode".
It took a lot of trial and error, and I had to learn to be patient and kind to myself when I missed days and subjects. Even now, I'm ironing out kinks and narrowing in on what my daily workflow is.
This is a conscious part of my life now, and by just working to find a rhythm that works for me, I have ensured that learning became a habit rather than a sporadic event. #Patience
4. Embracing Active Learning
I realized that passive learning wasn't enough; active engagement was the key. I immersed myself in the learning process by taking notes in my Second Brain with Obsidian, reflecting on what I learned, and applying it to real-life situations. I seek opportunities daily to practice and collaborate with others, engaging in discussions that deepen my understanding and enrich my growth.
Turn it into a game, like learning 3/4 cool things a day…
Did you know you can see a photo of the beginning of the universe?
Or that there was a brief movement to have intelligent people run the government?
How about that Kenya donated cows to the US after 9/11?
Or that a fully functioning Narco submarine was found? (10 tons, 5 passengers, +AC)
5. Tracking Progress and Celebrating Milestones
Along my learning journey, I track my progress and celebrate milestones, both big and small.
It's crucial to recognize that growth is not always linear—it involves challenges and setbacks. For me, it takes a moment at times, but once I shake off the initial reaction to a setback, I set to work on making the v2 model 2x better. I embrace moments of downfall as valuable opportunities to earn lessons that propel me forward.
In the end, celebrating the resilience and determination that carried me through is all the sweeter, because it truly was a battle fought and won.
